Glossary of Terms

AR (Atmospheric River): A concentrated stream of water vapor in the lower to middle atmosphere often responsible for high precipitation events in the Sierra.

QPF: quantitative precipitation forecast. This amount expressed in inches is the forecast amount of liquid water precipitated for a given system.

Temp: temperature

RH: relative humidity.

SWE: snow water equivalent. This is the liquid water content of snow

TH: trailhead

Euro model: A medium range forecasting model based out of Europe

GFS: The American medium range forecasting model system

Jet: Abbreviation for jet stream, a narrow river of air in the upper atmosphere that steers weather systems and serves as a boundary between air masses.

QPF: Quantitative precipitation forecast. This it the amount of liquid precipitation forecast for any storm.

Ensemble: A model forecast that blends multiple (often 100+) individual forecast model runs, giving an average forecast that excludes outliers.
